Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. New to this moving meditation practice? Unsure about what happens when you show up? We hope this bit of information will answer some questions.

As soon as you enter the space the music is playing and people are moving, practicing in silence. From time to time the facilitator offers cues for focus: breath, body parts, weight, pulse, release. There are no steps to learn. There is no way to do this “wrong”.   With instruction or without, just allow your body to respond to the music in its own way. Feet are a good place to bring your attention; simply move them and tend to your breathing. Connecting with others is sometimes challenging at first. But remember that each invitation is in service to encouraging movement and exploration, medicine that reaches across all languages, cultures and age groups.

The five rhythms are: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. Each rhythm is a teacher and as you practice moving, your relationship to body, heart, mind, soul and spirit deepens. Some people feel right at home from the get-go and others feel a bit (or a lot) self-conscious. People in the room have a wide range of experience. Your own dance will be unique. It can be subtle, powerful, revealing and, over time, it can be transformative.

Where the 5Rhythms are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, to change, to support, and to provide a safe place for each of us to shatter the ego’s hold and awaken the juicy, unpredictable, fascinating, edge-walking, rock star part of ourselves that yearns to be free.

Creativity. Connection. Community.

Infection rates are on the rise in our city. Many of the variants are more contagious and virulent than the original. And so we pivot again... certainly not for the last time! We are in constant movement with this and we all know things will change again.

At this time, to dance in the garden or at CLARA, participants must submit a proof of vaccination upon registration. Your record must indicate you are two weeks post your final injection. Distance is up to you.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this pandemic. Continual decision-making and pivoting are required to sustain our practice AND keep us safe. The CDC currently offers the most reliable guidance.

UNVACCINATED, Immuno-compromised, those stuck at home, those traveling, those not ready to dance with others...Please zoom with us from your location. We will let you know when it feels safe to return to in person in the garden.

VACCINATED...Submit proof of vaccine record upon registration and keep six feet physical distance. Masks are optional outdoors.

A reminder for us all: if you feel uncomfortable please move around the 2-acres of land. Plenty of distance is possible within range of music.

We have navigated this territory for more than a year now. Let's keep moving through each change together. We love you.

Current Online Guidelines

We understand that we are in a complicated situation and we hope that you can move gracefully with us during this time. This is the best we can offer, right now, in hopes of supporting all of you in this practice. We want you to take the best care of your body and decide what best works for you here. Know if you are online then there may be moments when we are focused on the in-person group and the music will hold you. Online dancers, you are free to join for the full two hours, or not. We know that 2 hours is a long time to dance from home. Please find a way to close your practice if you choose to leave before noon.

We are live again!

Want to connect? To your tender overlooked interior? To other willing and amazing people? Do you want to be part of a community that moves together twice weekly and is continually deepening? When you‘re ready to break free, come dance Wednesday Waves. Break free of what? Habitual ways of moving, tried and no-longer-true ways of being, those not-so-useful ways of connecting. Come move, come breathe, come feel.

We are dancing in-person at CLARA. At this time we are offering this class to the vaccinated only. All the eastern doors will be open. We are complying with county mandates requiring all indoor events to be masked and physically distanced. We will also be taking temperatures on entrance. This will not last forever.

HOT TIP!! Dancing in a mask is different. We have found the N95 or KN94 masks keep the mask off your nose and mouth and make it easier to breathe. Cloth masks tend to be more sweaty, precarious and don't stay put.

To Enroll: Drop-in is $20 per class, pay at the front desk with Cash, Venmo or Paypal
Dance cards are welcome for Wednesdays or Sundays.
You will need to upload your vaccination record prior to coming, or bring it with you for verification.
